The triangle chromatic index of Steiner triple systems

چکیده
In a Steiner triple system of order v, STS(v), a set of three lines intersecting pairwise in three distinct points is called a triangle. A set of lines containing no triangle is called triangle-free. The minimum number of triangle-free sets required to partition the lines of a Steiner triple system S, is called the triangle chromatic index of S. We prove that for all admissible v, there exists an STS(v) with triangle chromatic index at most 8V3v. In addition, by showing that the projective geometry PG( n, 3) may be partitioned into O( 6n / 5) caps, we prove that the STS( v) formed from the points and lines of the affine geometry AG(n, 3) has triangle chromatic index at most Avs, where s = loge 6/(3 loge 5) ~ 0.326186, and A is a constant. We also determine the values of the index for STS( v) with v ::; 13.

Circulants and the Chromatic Index of Steiner Triple Systems
We complete the determination of the chromatic number of 6valent circulants of the form C(n; a, b, a+b) and show how this can be applied to improving the upper bound on the chromatic index of cyclic Steiner triple systems.
متن کاملThe chromatic index of block intersection graphs of Kirkman triple systems and cyclic Steiner triple systems
The block intersection graph of a combinatorial design with block set B is the graph with B as its vertex set such that two vertices are adjacent if and only if their associated blocks are not disjoint. The chromatic index of a graph G is the least number of colours that enable each edge of G to be assigned a single colour such that adjacent edges never have the same colour. A graph G for which...

Properties of the 11 084 874 829 Steiner triple systems of order 19 are examined. In particular, there is exactly one 5-sparse, but no 6-sparse, STS(19); there is exactly one uniform STS(19); there are exactly two STS(19) with no almost parallel classes; all STS(19) have chromatic number 3; all have chromatic index 10, except for 4 075 designs with chromatic index 11 and two with chromatic inde...
متن کاملOn the 2-parallel chromatic index of Steiner triple systems
The 2-parallel chromatic index X" (8) is the minimum number of colours required to colour the blocks of a Steiner triple system 8 so that any two parallel blocks receive different colours. The value of X" (v) = min {X" (8) : 8 is an 8TS(v)} is determined for all admissible v.-It is further shown how the 2-parallel chromatic index is related to the independence number and a complete analysis for...
متن کاملComputing the Chromatic Index of Steiner Triple Systems
A Steiner triple system of order v, denoted STS (v), is a pair (V, B); V is a u-set of elements and B is a collection of 3-subsets of V called blocks. Each unordered pair of elements is contained in precisely one block. There is a substantial body of research on STS, partially because of their wide applicability in the design of experiments, and in the theory of error-correcting codes. In the d...
